Mike will provide information from various sources related to bias and unconscious bias. Ideas will be presented on how we as individuals and as organizations can take steps to overcome bias. A deeper dive is offered into how we as appraisers can address bias and prejudice in valuation. As appraisers we can reduce bias by paying attention, having a clear intention to address bias, and take specific actions to reduce bias. These elements are being offered for your consideration for you to be proactive in this area in the future.

The session will focus on how appraisers can identify and mitigate bias and prejudice in valuation work. Key steps include raising awareness, setting clear intentions, and taking actionable measures to reduce bias. These principles are offered to encourage proactive efforts in tackling bias within the appraisal process and beyond.

Speaker Details

Mike Gregory, ASA, CVA, is the founder of Michael Gregory Consulting, LLC, established in 2011. His firm specializes in mediation and negotiation conflict resolution, particularly in valuation disputes with the IRS and other organizations.

Mike helps clients achieve faster, more effective growth by leveraging The Collaboration Effect®, a neuroscience-based framework designed to enhance relationships, resources, and revenues.

During his 28-year tenure at the IRS, Mike led the national business valuation program for 11 years. He also served two terms on the Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity Committee (EEODC), (now known as Equity), for the Commissioner of the IRS Large Business and International Division, achieving a 90% reduction in complaints and a 70% reduction in payouts.

As a thought leader, Mike has authored 12 books and over 55 articles, integrating the latest research into his work. He has delivered hundreds of presentations on The Collaboration Effect®, conflict resolution, and valuation, earning a reputation as an engaging and insightful speaker.

His professional contributions include serving on the ASA Business Valuation Committee, chairing the Ethics and Oversight Board with the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts, and being a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Section. He is also a qualified mediator with the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Mike holds a BS from Valparaiso University, an MS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and an MBA from DePaul University. His unique expertise equips him to address complex challenges in valuation and conflict resolution effectively.
