Aubrey Catrone of Proper Provenance, LLC will lead a presentation on due diligence and provenance research for appraisers. As Aubrey puts it, “provenance is not just a bullet list of dead people!”
This presentation will focus on real-life examples of provenance research as they relate to an appraiser’s everyday tasks:
– Learn to recognize gaps in provenance and when they are significant.
– How reliable is my client’s documentation (i.e. auction records, bills of sale, archival sources, etc.)
– When does provenance impact appraisal reports, title disputes, and valuation issues?
– When should appraisers seek advanced research assistance?
– What tools and resources are available to appraisers and how have they changed during COVID?
About the Speaker: Aubrey Catrone is an international art historian, appraiser, and provenance researcher. Aubrey earned an MA in History of Art from University College London, specializing in the documented histories of art objects, and is a USPAP-compliant Associate Member of the Appraisers Association of America. With an art gallery and academic research background, Catrone founded Proper Provenance, LLC to provide her clients with the tools, not only to historically contextualize art but also to shed light on attribution and legal title within the international art market.
Catrone has researched artworks including paintings, artifacts, works on paper, prints, and sculptures spanning the fourth century B.C. to the twenty-first century A.D. She continues to volunteer with the Cultural Plunder by the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg: Jeu de Paume Database.
