In celebration of the centennial birthday of the artist Sam Francis, Debra Burchett-Lere and Gabrielle Selz will speak about the life, art, and market of one of the 20th Century’s most profound Abstract Expressionists. During their presentation, they will give a brief overview of Sam Francis’s multifarious life and then delve into his diverse periods and bodies of work, each with its own value considerations, market, and price points.
Debra Burchett-Lere, the Executive President of the Sam Francis Foundation, will focus on the role of how an artist’s foundation contributes to the artist’s legacy, covering topics such as the archive, catalog raisonné, and questions of authentication.
Gabrielle Selz, author of the first full-length Sam Francis biography, will discuss her experience researching and writing his biography as well as provide a behind-the-scenes look at her work with Christie’s London in 2019, to position and sell one of Sam Francis’s early Edge paintings, Iris, 1965-67.
